Information What is a Quadrat?
A quadrat is a 'rectangular plot used for ecological or population studies'

How do we make a quadrat?
For our purposes we used a 10 metre by 10 metre quadrat, using the following instructions.

Constructing a Quadrat

Equipment Required:

4 wooden stakes
4 measuring tapes
1 mallet
Quadrat Measurements

Create a straight line of 10m:
Measure a line of 10m with tape one - ensure the tape is straight and level with the ground.
Mark either end of the line with a stake - measure from the centre of each stake.

Create a right angle:
Keeping the first tape where it is, send a second tape out from the left hand stake at 90 degrees.
To create a perfect right angle, use a third tape to ensure that the distance between the 6m mark on the first tape is exactly 10m from the 8m mark on the second tape, as shown in the diagram - ensure that all tapes are straight and are level with the ground.
Mark the third corner with a stake - measure from the centre of the stake.

Create the Square:
To create the square, project a tape each from the second and third stakes.
Where the two 10m marks meet mark the fourth corner.

Taking Coordinates:
Use the first and second tape as the x and y axes respectively.
Take coordinates in the form (036, 849)
This means 36cm along the x-axis (tape 1) and 8m 49cm along the y-axis (tape 2).
