Priestlands Physical Education Heritage Project 2003

Once the site is accessible again due to the dredging we are planning to phase the orienteering course as soon as possible. This will take place in phases during lessons while also being an extra - curricular facility.

The main emphasis at the beginning will be for fitness purposes, setting personal fitness programme's, team training, cross - country training and then towards more orienteering skill based activities.

Proposed phasing into lessons.

PHASE 1.

· Sept - 2003 - To be used as a fitness component once in each unit of work before lesson. (units of work last for six weeks)
· To be used as an after school fitness training programme for school teams.
· To be a facility for personal fitness for staff and pupils. Details of methods of training and developing a personal fitness programme will be on notice board for personal use.

PHASE 2.

· Nov 2003 - To be used as part of the cross - country club training for the area championships.
· Part of the course will be used for the A V a cross - country competition in lessons.

PHASE 3.

· 2004 - The development of orienteering skills on the course will be used with the mixed groups of P.E in each year group. These tend to be suited to the pupil who needs special support and find P.E difficult. They are in mixed sex groups and work towards more specific targets for personal achievement rather than team games.
· The unit will be for six weeks when pupils will use the course to:

1. Develop a positive attitude to personal fitness.
2. Work individually or in pairs to navigate the course.
3. Use the facilities on each post to problem solve while also working on fitness.
4. Introduce compass work to navigate between posts.
5. Pace work with blindfolding in pairs to navigate in simulation of darkness or misty conditions.
6. Orienteering competitions with orienteering markers that are related to the posts as landmarks but go more off the "beaten track"

PHASE 4.

· The long term plan will be to extend the course over the school site. This is based on the principles gained from navigation, orienteering and fitness.
· The course will involve making more posts that will represent the school cross - country course.
· Lesson planning will be built around navigating from post to post not necessarily in a course but with a return point.
· A fitness trail has been thought about to include diagrams and activities at each post to be used by the local community and pupils within the school.
