EVALUATION
Management of Project
To set up steering group led by Project Coordinator; to oversee all project objectives and liaise with HLF Monitor.
Steering Group established and regular planning meetings held; Project Coordinator stepped down July 2002.
Deputy Head appointed as Project Coordinator; grant submissions 1 & 2 made; completion of surveys and model curriculum projects.
Full curriculum review, seminar and exhibition held; website launched, grant submissions 3 & 4 made.
  • Progress in Year 1 delayed due to change in Coordinator.
  • Costings underestimated time required for management of project
Heritage Archive / Historical Record
To compile an archive record of all sources and materials, accessible to schools and community partners.
All existing sources collated and catalogued; Heritage file produced for each department.
Investigation into organisation of archive; advisory visit of archivist; preparation of archive underway.
Archive storage purchased; resources and project materials catalogued; archive available to schools and community partners for research.
  • Archive provides complementary resource alongside website.
  • Development of archive evolved slowly as its uses were more clearly identified. Work still being developed on how this will be retained long-term
Conservation Plan
To prepare a Conservation Plan which defines the asset, involves pupil / community involvement and curriculum guidance.
Preparation of brief and tenders put out to landscape architects.
Appointment of ‘Jenny Coe Landscape Architect’. Initial surveys and investigations undertaken. Reports made to Steering Group.
Completion of Plan, including consultation with pupils at secondary school; presentation at Exhibition in July 2004; included on website and in archive.
  • Completion date delay reduced use of the Plan during funding period of project.
  • Plan provides valuable resource on asset of the site and curriculum opportunities
Brief for Landscape Masterplan
To establish a brief for long-term capital works on the site.
 
Brief incorporated into Conservation Plan.
Liaison with HCC and local council re management of capital works and assets.
  • Limited progress with undertaking for long-term conservation of key features
Ecological and Arboricultural Surveys
To undertake surveys of the whole site to identify species and link with ecological issues.
Fungi, ecological and arboricultural surveys undertaken; model project set up to involve pupils from all 3 schools in investigation and analysis.
Surveys database used to inform curriculum projects planning; research into cross-phase development of Year 1 model project.
Surveys database included on website and in archive.
  • Useful resource on assets of site.
  • Scope for further development and building on initial analysis still to be explored
Historical Survey
To compile a detailed inventory and preliminary historical survey on the heritage asset.
 
Preparation of brief and tenders put out; appointment of CKC Archaeology and Sybil Wade (archaeologist); completion of survey.
Surveys used to inform curriculum projects planning; presentation at seminar December 2003; included on website and in archive.
  • Valuable resource being used by teachers, pupils and visitors for range of research tasks.
  • Brief could have been extended to incorporate more of Infant and Junior School sites.
Development of Interactive Website
Setting up and launch of the website to provide an organic interactive archive and resource.
Costing and setting up of website across three schools.
Preparation of website pages; development of database.
Launch of website at Exhibition July 2004; building of website pages ongoing.
  • Website offers an interactive site for curriculum use; information base for teachers and organisations; record of project.
  • Ongoing development and updating will require funding beyond project.
Dissemination of Project
Disseminating of the project’s achievements and outcomes.
 
 
Full review undertaken; seminar held December 2003 to promote project assets to potential and existing community partners; Exhibition held July 2004; website launched; ‘Community Partnership’ list finalised; articles submitted to Learning Through Landscapes, English Heritage and Hampshire Gardens Trust.
  • Wide ranging interest in the project within community and across all HCC schools
  • Website will promote national interest.
